Rodeo of the Year for Horse Heaven

Boy, have we got some cowboys and cowgirls around here. That is a fact, not a question.

The Horse Heaven Round-Up made the big breakthrough last weekend in Redmond, Ore.

Nationally and internationally, when you're talking rodeo competitions, the Pendleton Round-Up is the one to beat.

This year, Kennewick's Horse Heaven Round-Up did exactly that.

For the first time in its 60-year history, the Horse Heaven event took first prize as Large Rodeo of the Year for the Columbia River Circuit.

That's a fierce competition.

You succeed by winning over the cowboys and cowgirls who do the competing and the voting. In other words, if not a grass-roots victory, it certainly comes from the packed-dirt floor of the arena.

Astronaut to kids: Aim high

You pinch yourself every now and then," Marshburn said about fulfilling his astronaut dream. "A lot of work was fulfilled that day."

Marshburn, who has a kindergarten-aged daughter, said the purpose of his visits Monday was to teach youngsters to achieve higher education and, possibly, become involved in one of NASA's programs.

Marshburn fielded questions from the audience following a slideshow about space, where questions ranged from "Have you ever been to the moon?" to "How does it feel to be in a spacecraft?"

While noting that the last time an astronaut went to the moon was in 1974, Marshburn told his young audience, "One of you guys has a better chance of going to the moon than I do."

He described the feeling of being launched into space as being inside a "very fast elevator."

"You can barely read the dials; that's how bad you are shaking," he said.
