Emirates ready to sell SL Airlines’ stake

COLOMBO: Emirates Airlines Sunday announced it was willing to sell all or part of its near 44% stake in Sri Lankas national carrier after terminating its management contract with the carrier.

We would be interested in selling part or all of it (...) if people would be interested in buying after March, when its 10-year management contract runs out, Emirates president Tim Clark told AFP in Dubai. He valued Emirates stake in SriLankan Airlines at $150 million.

Emirates will retain its 43.6% equity in the company for the time-being, and continue to have a board presence, he said. Clarks statement came amid worsening relations between Emirates Airlines and Colombo.

The Dubai-based airline announced earlier in a statement it would cease to run SriLankan Airlines from April 1, with the imminent ending of a decade-long contract.

forget it

Is Bush going to sign the 700-mile border fence bill (the Secure Fence Act), passed with great fanfare by Congress a little over a week ago? According to an AP story from Friday:

President Bush has not yet signed the Secure Fence Act

That signing ceremony he held last Wednesday in Arizona, it turns out, was only for a Homeland Security appropriations bill that included "$1.2 billion for border fencing." It wasn't the Secure Fence Act.

We're approaching pocket veto territory here, aren't we? Under the Constitution Bush has 10 days to sign the bill into law--a deadline that would seem to be rapidly approaching.** ... [Thanks to reader M.M.]

P.S.: If I were paranoid, I would notice that even though WaPo and other MSM outlets have reported that Bush "has indicated that he will sign" the bill, he hasn't really.

Melinda Gates goes public (pg. 2)

If you are successful, it is because somewhere, sometime, someone gave you a life or an idea that started you in the right direction. Remember also that you are indebted to life until you help some less fortunate person, just as you were helped. - Melinda Gates, valedictory speech, Ursuline Academy, 1982

Unlike William H. Gates III, whose parents, Bill and Mary, were civic leaders in Seattle, Melinda French grew up not knowing privilege or wealth. Her father worked on the space program at LTV. Her mother was a stay-at-home mom who didn't go to college and regretted it. Says Melinda, who has one sister 14 months older and two younger brothers: "My parents told us, 'No matter what college you get into, we will pay for it.'"

That Apple III was actually the family's second computer; when Melinda was 14, her father brought home an Apple II, the first consumer computer on the market.

White is a firm believer in growing grass roots support for political movements on a town-by-town basis, especially in the area of renewable energy. This year, after much hard work, his evangelizing efforts paid off. The ex-candidate and his small, informal group of activists worked with residents and officials in a number of neighboring Cape Cod towns to get initiatives placed on town meeting warrants for the construction of solar panels on municipal buildings. And just last month, voters in the town of Yarmouth voted overwhelmingly to spend $50,000 of town money to put a solar panels on the roof of their town hall...
