State House Dome: State retirement system 'a shell game'
When he first took charge of the committee that studied reform of the state retirement system, William Bartlett spent about two hours trying to understand one of its more confusing aspects. Once he did, he reached a simple conclusion. "It's a shell game," he told the House Finance Committee last week. .
Rudy and Pat -- each other's new best friend
So, yes, Rudy's basically the anti-Christ. But, hey, if he can beat Hillary, who cares? I admire what my Jewish friends call chutzpah, and it took plenty of that for Rudy to come seeking my endorsement. If you recall (as too many people do), I joined Jerry Falwell in blaming the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America's permissive attitude toward homosexuals, feminism and prime-time television, among other biblical evils. It wasn't the first loony thing I've ever said, and it won't be the last. Of course, Rudy was mayor of New York on the day that God allowed the pagan hijackers to crash those jetliners into the World Trade Centers, so one might have expected him to hold a grudge because of my callous remarks. Not Rudy. He couldn't have been nicer.
A springboard to riches and opportunities
We are excited about the proposed development of new diving facilities (at the Commonwealth Pool) which will be state-of-the-art and ensure that a centre of sporting excellence will be available to everyone who wishes to participate in water sports." The city has drawn up £36m plans to overhaul the Commonwealth Pool, creating a new 50-metre, eight-lane pool; a re- orientated 25-metre diving pool; a dry dive facility; a 25-metre pool; new soft play facilities; an expanded gym and redesigned changing areas. But the rising cost of the project means the council is facing a £17m funding gap and there are concerns about the city's ability to complete the work without more help from the Scottish Government. The Government, which has pledged £4m, has said the council also needs to play its part in funding the work.
