Tesco defector's DSG challenge

John Browett, the Tesco defector who started at DSG International last week, is going to import some of the grocer's style and strategy to the electrical retailer to improve its fortunes.

Mr Browett was hired in part for his expertise in the internet, after having taken Tesco.com from a fledging business to one of the UK's most successful online brands.

However, he is also the man who developed Tesco's blueprint for running businesses overseas and is likely to develop a similar master-plan for DSG, which has a portfolio across Europe, from Currys and PC World in the UK to Kotsovolos in Greece and Elkjøp in Norway.

Front gardens to raise a smile

Stopping every now and again to rest, my eyes would often alight on a particularly pretty window box, or a tub full of shrubs and bright pansies, sometimes entwined with fairy lights. I wonder if the gardeners who created them know how much happiness their efforts gave me and other passers-by.

Maybe they do, because front gardens are sociable spaces. Unlike our back gardens, hidden behind high fences, front gardens give something back to the street. Many of the local people I now call friends are those who stopped to chat while I was out watering the pots in our front garden when we first moved in.

Since I re-designed it a few years ago, some have even said they make a detour on their journey to the tube in the mornings just to see what's going on. Every winter, when choosing the seeds that I will sow for the coming summer, I'm always wondering what would excite the neighbours too.

Altarum Wins $7 Million Contract to Provide Technical Assistance to ...

WASHINGTON, Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Altarum Institute today announced that it has been awarded a $7 million contract to provide technical assistance to the Access to Recovery program (ATR), administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The contract, with two additional option years for another $10 million, is the largest health care award ever received by the nonprofit institute.

"The Access to Recovery program is a prime example of why taking a systems view matters in the delivery of health care services," said Altarum CEO Linc Smith. "ATR is a holistic, systems-based approach to recovery from substance use disorders. ATR puts patients at the center, giving them the tools and the power to make informed choices about which providers offer the services that will best suit them and best equip them to live productive lives in the community."

The ATR program begins with the understanding that substance use recovery is not a linear event.
