| Millions of DHA money unaccountable
DALLAS - A recent audit has found that millions of taxpayer dollars are unaccounted for inside the Dallas Housing Authority. The audit found the books so disorganized and mismanaged that nearly $4 million aren't accounted for. The DHA oversees 16,000 families with rental vouchers. When a family who already has a voucher moves to Dallas, the DHA gets reimbursed from the city from where the tenant came from. However, the DHA's recordkeeping in tracking the portable vouchers in 2005 and 2006 were found to be sloppy. "I am concerned about the findings in this report and I've taken the necessary steps to address the problems," said Ann Lott, DHA president and CEO. The audit concluded that DHA tried to account for vouchers with "inaccurate, unreliable and altered records," and then billed HUD for $3.7 million that's unaccounted for and HUD now wants back.
Court closes hearing in the slaying of federal prosecutor Thomas Wales
In 2005, Kwan was held for 23 days as a material witness in the Wales case, but is not considered a suspect. The appeal was filed over a ruling made in secret by a federal district court judge in Seattle. The nature of the appeal and who brought it are secret, and the court filings are sealed. Conte opposed closing Wednesday's hearing. He said he could not discuss the court's ruling today. The request that the hearing be closed came from Steve Clymer, the New York-based special prosecutor who has overseen the Wales investigation for the past six years. Clymer has declined to discuss the hearing because federal grand-jury matters are secret. Closed hearings are rare, but not unheard of, in the appeals court, said spokesman Dave Madden.

The Weekly DiScussion: Have we lost our stomach for intelligent debate ...
Of course, Morrissey has been here before; sometime around 1992 where it all came to a head with a Union Jack flag and a Madness support slot. So you would have thought he might have been a tad cautious about even muttering the word 'immigration', let alone passing comment upon it. Perhaps though, he doesn't care. I've been told by many that when you get to a certain age, a certain point in life, you stop worrying about who's going to judge you because it doesn't matter anymore. What he must have been aware of though, was that his statements would be debated. Or not. For there doesn't seem to be much debate about anything, anymore. More a series of screaming headlines found daily on your newspaper or website of choice, condemning people for actions, thoughts or words that dare to be different or out of step with the common consensus.
